Airbrush Tanning: Getting the Bronze without Getting the Burn

It can be frightening going out under the sun these days, especially if it is to get a tan.  Prolonged exposure to sunlight, particularly between 10 o’clock in the morning and 4 o’clock in the afternoon, can cause skin damage from ultraviolet rays.  The only safe way to get a bronzed, sun-kissed look that you often get from sunbathing at the beach is to go through sunless tanning.  This tanning without sunlight is often best achieved through airbrush tanning.

Airbrush tanning is a good option if you are really determined to get rid of the pasty pale look on your skin and get a healthy brown glow.  After all, whilst the results of getting a tan the natural way looks better, it can lead to very bad side effects.  The least of these side effects can be sunburn, but the worst is premature aging and skin cancer.  These are not a fair price to having beautiful brown skin.  You can also have the bronzed look even if it is the middle of winter.

How It Works

How does airbrush tanning work?  The process is done using an airbrush and a solution that contains a chemical substance called dihydroxyacetone or DHA.  When DHA comes into contact with the skin, it reacts with the amino acids and the proteins present on the surface of the skin.  This reaction is the one that produces the golden brown or bronze colour.

There are two main ways of getting DHA applied on the skin.  The first way is to do it on your own body.  You can buy a self-tanning product and spray it all over yourself, or you can ask a friend or your partner to do it for you.  Getting it done at home is the least expensive way of tanning yourself without the aid of the sun.

The second way of getting the sunless tanning done is by going to a professional.  The professional can be found at a tanning salon, a day spa or at a dermatologist’s clinic.  Tanning salons offer the fastest artificial tanning process available, whilst day spas offer comfort and relaxation during the process.  On the other hand, a dermatologist will not just make your skin turn bronze but can also hide your skin imperfections under the tan.

It is entirely your choice as to where to go.  Doing it yourself is not only inexpensive but also very convenient.  However, getting it done by a professional will always give the best results.

Is It Safe?

Is sunless tanning a safe thing to do?  Compared to the other option, which is to get tanned under real sunlight, airbrush tanning does not pose any known dangers to anyone.  DHA has been approved by the US Food and Drug Authority since twenty years ago.

Nonetheless, it would not hurt to take precautions when tanning in this method.  The FDA asserts that DHA should not be inhaled, ingested or sprayed anywhere on the eye area.  Aside from that, it would be best for people with allergies and pregnant women to stay away from DHA.

Sunless tanning is a great option to getting bronzed at the beach.  Through this sunless airbrush tanning, you can avoid skin damage from ultraviolet exposure, and you can have the tan that you want all year-round.
